How to divide different types of fractions?

Dividing fractions can seem tricky at first, but it’s straightforward once you understand the process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you divide different types of fractions, including proper fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers.

  1. Dividing Proper Fractions & Improper Fractions
A proper fraction is where the numerator (top number) is less than the denominator (bottom number).
An improper fraction is where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.

Steps:

  • Find the reciprocal of the second fraction (flip the numerator and the denominator).
  • Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
  • Simplify the resulting fraction if possible.
  1. Dividing Mixed Numbers
A mixed number consists of an integer and a proper fraction.

Steps:

  • Convert to Improper Fractions
  • Find the reciprocal of the second improper fraction.
  • Multiply the first improper fraction by the reciprocal of the second improper fraction.
  • Simplify the resulting fraction if possible.

Key Points to Remember

  1. Reciprocal: Always find the reciprocal of the divisor (the second fraction) when dividing fractions.
  2. Multiply: Change the division problem to a multiplication problem by multiplying the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
  3. Simplify: Simplify your answer, if possible, by dividing the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).
