How to divide mixed numbers?

Steps to divide a mixed number by a mixed number:

  1. Convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions.
  2. Invert the divisor (the second fraction). To invert a fraction.
  3. Cancel any common factors in the numerators and denominators and multiply the fractions.
  4. Simplify the resulting fraction by reducing it to the lowest terms or by converting the resulting fraction back into a mixed number when possible.

Example: Divide 2 3/4 by 1 1/2
Step 1:
Convert 2 3/4 to an improper fraction: 11/4
Convert 1 1/2 to an improper fraction: 3/2
Step 2:
Invert the divisor: 3/2 becomes 2/3
Step 3:
Cancel & multiply the fractions:
(11/4) × (2/3) = 22/12
Step 4:
Simplify and convert the fraction:
22/12 = 11/6
Step 5:
Convert the resulting fraction back to a mixed number:
11/6 = 1 5/6
Therefore, 2 3/4 divided by 1 1/2 is equal to 1 5/6.
