Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 8 students learn how to find the volumes of figures composed of combinations of cylinders, cones, and spheres.

To find the volume of a composite solidβa shape thatβs made up of two or more basic solids, such as cylinders, cones, prisms, and spheresβyou can follow these general steps:

Steps for Finding the Volume of Composite Solids Identify the Basic Solids: Break down the composite solid into recognizable shapes, such as cubes, prisms, cylinders, cones, spheres, or pyramids.

Calculate the Volume of Each Shape Separately:

- Use the appropriate formula for each basic solid. Here are some common volume formulas:

Cylinder: π = ππ^{2}h

Cone: π = 1/3 ππ2β

Sphere: π = 4/3 ππ3

Rectangular prism: π = π Γ π€ Γ h

Pyramid: π = 1/3 Base Area Γ Height

Substitute the dimensions for each solid and calculate the individual volumes. - Add or Subtract the Volumes as Needed:

Add volumes for shapes that combine to form the composite solid.

Subtract volumes if one shape is removed from another (like a hole in a cylinder or a cone cut out of a sphere).
