Volume of Cones & Cylinders

Cone
A cone is a three-dimensional shape with a circular base that tapers to a point.

Formula:
Volume (V) = 1/3 * π * r² * h
Where:
r is the radius of the base
h is the height of the cone

Cylinder
A cylinder is a three-dimensional shape with two parallel circular bases connected by a curved surface.

Formula:
Volume (V) = π * r² * h
Where:
r is the radius of the base
h is the height of the cylinder

Key Points:

  • Both cones and cylinders have circular bases.
  • The volume of a cone is one-third the volume of a cylinder with the same base radius and height.
  • Make sure to use the correct units for radius and height (e.g., cm, inches).

The following diagram shows the formulas for the volumes of a cylinder and a cone.
