Take Away from 8?

Teaching the concept of “taking away from 8” or subtraction from the number 8 to kindergarten students involves interactive and hands-on activities.

1. Begin by reviewing the concept of taking away or subtraction. Explain that when we subtract, we are finding out how many are left after we take some away.
2. Utilize counters, toys, or any other tangible objects to represent the number 8. Place six objects in front of the students and ask them to count.
3. Physically demonstrate subtraction by taking away a certain number of objects from the set of 8. For example, take away 2 objects and ask, “How many are left?”
4. Use visuals to represent the subtraction action. Draw six circles on the board and cross out or remove a certain number. Emphasize that the crossed-out circles represent the ones that are taken away.
5. Write subtraction sentences on the board using the number 8. For example, “8 - 2 = 6.” Read the sentence together and discuss the meaning of each part.
6. Introduce simple worksheets with pictures or objects representing 8. Ask students to complete subtraction problems by crossing out or removing a specified number.
