- Utilize everyday objects such as counters, toys, or classroom items to demonstrate taking away. For example, start with a group of 5 toys and physically remove 2, emphasizing that you have taken away 2.
- Allow students to physically manipulate objects. Provide a set of objects and ask them to take away a certain number. Then, count what remains.
- Introduce worksheets with pictures or objects that can be crossed out. Ask students to complete the subtraction problems by taking away the specified number.
- Write simple subtraction sentences using the words “take away” and symbols (-). For example, “5 take away 2 equals 3.” and “5 - 2 = 3.”
