Take Away or Subtraction?

  1. Explain that “take away” means removing or subtracting something from a group.
  2. Utilize everyday objects such as counters, toys, or classroom items to demonstrate taking away. For example, start with a group of 5 toys and physically remove 2, emphasizing that you have taken away 2.
  3. Allow students to physically manipulate objects. Provide a set of objects and ask them to take away a certain number. Then, count what remains.
  4. Introduce worksheets with pictures or objects that can be crossed out. Ask students to complete the subtraction problems by taking away the specified number.
  5. Write simple subtraction sentences using the words “take away” and symbols (-). For example, “5 take away 2 equals 3.” and “5 - 2 = 3.”
