Grade 2 Worksheets
In these Second Grade math worksheets, students practice subtracting a 1-digit number from a 3-digit number with regrouping or borrowing. For example, 357 - 8 = 349.

How to subtract a 1-digit number from a 3-digit number:

  1. Write the numbers vertically, aligning the digits by place value:
Hundreds, tens, and ones places should be aligned correctly.
Write the larger number (3-digit) above the smaller number (1-digit).
  2. Subtract the ones digit:
Start with the ones column on the right.
If the top ones digit is greater than or equal to the bottom ones digit, subtract directly and write the difference.
If the top ones digit is smaller than the bottom ones digit, you’ll need to “borrow or regroup” from the tens place.
Subtract the bottom digit from the top digit.
Write the difference below the line.
  3. Write down the hundreds and tens digits:
  4. Check your answer:
Add the difference you calculated to the smaller number (the 1-digit number). If the sum equals the larger number (the 3-digit number), your subtraction is correct.
