How to find the Range?

There are two sets of Range worksheets.

  • Range Worksheet (Positive Numbers).
  • Range Worksheet (Include Negative Numbers).

The range of a dataset is the difference between the maximum (largest) and minimum (smallest) values in the dataset. It provides a measure of the spread or variation in the data. To find the range of a dataset, follow these steps:

  1. Order Your Data
Start by arranging the data in either ascending (smallest to largest) or descending (largest to smallest) order. This step is important to easily identify the maximum and minimum values.
  2. Identify the Maximum and Minimum Values
Once your data is organized, the maximum value is the largest value at the end of the list, and the minimum value is the smallest value at the beginning of the list.
  3. Calculate the Range
Subtract the minimum value from the maximum value to find the range:
Range = Maximum Value − Minimum Value

For example, let’s find the range of the following dataset:
12,5,8,17,9,4,21

  1. Order Your Data
    Arranging the data in ascending order: 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 17, 21
  2. Identify the Maximum and Minimum Values
    Maximum Value: 21
    Minimum Value: 4
  3. Calculate the Range
    Range = 21 − 4 = 17
So, the range of this dataset is 17.

The range is a simple but useful measure of the spread or variability in a dataset. It tells you how much the data values differ from one another.
