How to find the Median?

There are two sets of Median worksheets.

• Median Worksheet (Positive Numbers).
• Median Worksheet (Include Negative Numbers).

To find the median of a dataset, follow these steps:

1. Order the Data
   Start by arranging the data in ascending order, from the smallest value to the largest value.
   
2. Find the Median If the dataset contains an odd number of values, the median is the middle value. If the dataset is arranged in ascending order, it’s the value in the center.
   If the dataset contains an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values. Add the two middle values together and divide by 2.
   

For example, let’s find the median of the following dataset:
12, 17, 9, 5, 21

1. Order the Data
   Arrange the data in ascending order:
   5, 9, 12, 17, 21
   
2. Find the Median
   There are 5 values in the dataset, which is an odd number.
   Since the dataset has an odd number of values, the median is the middle value, which is 12.
   So, the median of this dataset is 12.

If the dataset had been even, you would take the average of the two middle values.
For example, if the dataset was:
12, 17, 9, 5, 21, 25
After ordering the data, you would have:
5, 9, 12, 17, 21, 25

Now, there are 6 values (an even number).
To find the median, you’d take the average of the two middle values (12 and 17):
Median = (12+17)/2 = 14.5
So, the median of this even-sized dataset is 14.5.
