How to find the Mean, Median, Mode?

There are two sets of Mean, Median, Mode worksheets.

  • Mean, Median, Mode Worksheet (Positive Numbers).
  • Mean, Median, Mode Worksheet (Include Negative Numbers).

To find the mean, median, and mode of a dataset, follow these steps:

  1. Organize Your Data Start by organizing your dataset. This could mean arranging it in ascending or descending order, depending on your preference and the size of the dataset. Organizing the data can make it easier to find the median.
  2. Find the Mean (Average) The mean (average) is calculated by adding up all the values in the dataset and then dividing by the number of values in the dataset. The formula for the mean: mean = (Sum of Values)/(Number of Values)
  3. Find the Median The median is the middle value of the dataset when it’s ordered. If the dataset has an odd number of values, the median is the middle value. If the dataset has an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values.
  4. Find the Mode The mode is the value that appears most frequently in the dataset. There can be more than one mode (multimodal) if multiple values share the highest frequency.

Example: Find the mean, median, and mode of the following dataset: 3, 2, 9, 8, 9, 2, 2

  1. Organize Your Data Organize the data in ascending order: 2, 2, 2, 3, 8, 9, 9
  2. Find the Mean Mean = (2+2+2+3+8+9+9)/7 = 5 So, the mean of this dataset is 5.
  3. Find the Median Since there are 7 values (an odd number), the median is the middle value. In this case, the middle value is 3. So, the median of this dataset is 3.
  4. Find the Mode The mode is the value with the highest frequency, which is 2 in this dataset. So, the mode is 2.

In summary, for the dataset 2, 2, 2, 3, 8, 9, 9, the mean is 5, the median is 3, and the mode is 2.
