How to convert Percents to Fractions?

There are 3 sets of convert percents to fractions worksheets:

  • Convert whole number percents to fractions
  • Convert percents that are not whole numbers to fractions
  • Convert percents to mixed numbers.

You can follow these steps to convert a percent to a fraction:

  1. Remove the percent symbol ("%") from the number.
  2. Write the number as the numerator of the fraction.
  3. The denominator of the fraction is 100.
  4. Simplify the fraction when possible.

Example: Convert 75% to a fraction.

  1. Remove the percent symbol: 75
  2. Write the number as the numerator: 75
  3. The denominator is 100: 100
  4. Simplify the fraction: Divide the numerator and denominator by 25
    75/100 = (75 ÷ 25) / (100 ÷ 25) = 3/4
So, 75% is equivalent to the fraction 3/4.

If the percent is not a whole number then you may follow these steps:

  1. Remove the percent sign (%).
  2. Divide the number by 100 by moving the decimal point two places to the left.
  3. Write the decimal as a fraction.
  4. Simplify the fraction if necessary.

Example: Converting 4.5% to a fraction

  1. Remove the percent sign (%): 4.5
  2. Divide the number by 100: 0.045
  3. Write the decimal as a fraction: 45/1000
  4. Simplify the fraction: Divide both the numerator and denominator by 5
    45/1000 = (45 ÷ 5) / (1000 ÷ 5) = 9/200
So, 4.5% can be expressed as the fraction 9/200.

If the percent is greater than 100% then it would be converted to a mixed number.
You can follow these steps to convert a percent to a mixed number:

  1. Remove the percent sign (%).
  2. Divide the number by 100 by moving the decimal point two places to the left.
  3. Express as a mixed number.
  4. Simplify the fraction part when possible.

Example: Convert 135% to a mixed number

  1. Remove the percent sign: 135
  2. Divide by 100: 135 ÷ 100 = 1.35
  3. Express as a mixed number: 1.35 can be expressed as 1 + 0.35, or 1 and 35/100.
  4. Simplify the fraction part: Divide both the numerator and denominator by 5
    35/100 = (35 ÷ 5) / (100 ÷ 5) = 7/20
So, 135% can be expressed as the mixed number 1 7/20.
