Add & Subtract Time Game
To add and subtract time, align hours with hours and minutes with minutes. For addition, if the minutes exceed 60, add 1 to the hours and subtract 60 from the minutes. For subtraction, if the minutes are less than what you need to subtract, borrow 1 hour (or 60 minutes) from the hours, add it to the minutes, and then proceed with the subtraction. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

In this game, you will be given two times in hours and minutes. You need to either add or subtract them. You can select to practice either addition, subtraction, or a random mix. If you give a wrong answer, the game will give you the correct solution.

How to add time
Add and Subtract Time

  1. Add the minutes: Add the minutes from both times.
  2. Check the sum of minutes:
If the sum is 60 or more, convert it to hours and minutes by subtracting 60 from the minutes and adding 1 to the hours.
If the sum is less than 60, the minutes are correct.
  3. Add the hours: Add the hours, including any carry-over hour from the minutes.

    Example: 5 hours 45 minutes + 3 hours 30 minutes
    Minutes: 45 + 30 = 75 minutes.
Convert minutes: 75 minutes is more than 60. So, 75 - 60 = 15 minutes, and we add 1 hour.
    Hours: 5 + 3 + 1 (carry-over) = 9 hours.
    Answer: 9 hours 15 minutes.

How to subtract time

  1. Subtract the minutes: Subtract the minutes from the minutes.
  2. Check the result of minutes:
If the result is negative (you can’t subtract a larger number from a smaller one), borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) from the hours.
Add the borrowed 60 minutes to the original minutes, making the result positive.
    Subtract 1 from the hours.
If the result is positive or zero, the minutes are correct.
  3. Subtract the hours: Subtract the hours.

    Example: 6 hours 20 minutes - 3 hours 45 minutes
Minutes: 20 - 45. This is negative, so we need to borrow.
Borrow 1 hour: Borrow 1 hour from the 6 hours, making it 5 hours. Add 60 minutes to 20 minutes, making it 80 minutes. The new sum is 5 hours 80 minutes.
    Minutes: 80 - 45 = 35 minutes.
    Hours: 5 - 3 = 2 hours.
    Answer: 2 hours 35 minutes.
