How to find elapsed time
Elapsed time, when given in a 12-hour clock format, can be found by calculating the duration between a start time and an end time.
There are several methods to find elapsed time:
Find elapsed time

Using a Number Line to Calculate Elapsed Time

  1. Create a number line with the start and end time.
  2. Count the minutes to the nearest hour after the start time.
  3. Count the minutes to the nearest hour before the end time.
  4. Then add the total minutes and the hour.

Calculate Elapsed Time using the 24-hour clock

  1. The start and end times are converted to a 24-hour format.
  2. The difference in minutes between the start time and the end time is calculated. If the end time’s minutes are less than the start time’s minutes, 60 minutes are borrowed from the end time’s hour, and the end time’s hour is reduced by 1.
  3. The difference in hours between the start time and the end time is calculated.
  4. The calculated differences in hours and minutes are combined to determine the total elapsed time.

    Example Calculation

To find the elapsed time from 9:30 AM to 2:15 PM:
  5. The start time is 9:30 AM. The end time is 2:15 PM, which is converted to 14:15 in 24-hour format.
  6. The minutes are calculated: 15 - 30. Since 15 < 30, 60 minutes are borrowed from the hours, making the end time 13:75. The minute difference is 75-30=45 minutes.
  7. The hours are calculated: 13 - 9 = 4 hours.
  8. The elapsed time is 4 hours and 45 minutes.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to find elapsed time.
