Add 3 Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Add 3 Challenge! Now that you’ve mastered the small jumps, Add 1 and Add 2, it’s time to take a bigger leap. This game is designed to help you sharpen your mental addition and build “numerical fluency” — the ability to see a number and instantly know what it looks like when increased by three. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play

  1. Analyze the Problem
In the center of the screen, you’ll see a math problem. Because of the Commutative Property (a fancy way of saying order doesn’t matter in addition), the problem will appear in two ways:
    The Standard Jump: 12 + 3
    The Reverse Jump: 3 + 12
Both of these have the same answer.

  2. Take the “Triple Jump”
Instead of counting by ones, try to visualize jumping three spots on a number line.
    Example: If you see 7 + 3, think “8, 9… 10."

  3. Choose Wisely
You will be presented with four options. Be careful! The game generates “distractors” (wrong answers) that are very close to the correct one to make sure you are really doing the math.
Correct Answer: You’ll hear a happy “ping” and the button will turn green.
Mistake: You’ll hear a “bonk” and the button will turn red. The game will show you the correct sum so you can memorize it for the next round.

  4. Track Your Accuracy
Check the blue bubble in the top right to see your current score.
Goal: Try to get your accuracy as close to 100% as possible.

  5. Keep Challenging Yourself
Once you’ve answered, click NEXT CHALLENGE ➔ to generate a new random problem. The game uses numbers from 0 to 17, so you’ll always be working with totals up to 20.

Strategy Tip: Use Your “Add 2” Skills
If you’re stuck, remember your “Add 2” pattern and just go one number further. For example, if you know 5 + 2 is 7, then 5 + 3 must be 8.
