Surface Area of Solids (include composite solids)

To find the surface area of composite figures (also known as composite solids), you need to calculate the surface area of each individual shape that makes up the figure and then add or subtract the areas as needed. Composite figures can be a combination of prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids, and other solids.

Steps to Find the Surface Area of Composite Figures:

- Break Down the Figure: Identify the different simple solids that make up the composite figure. Break the composite figure into its individual components.
- Calculate the Surface Area of Each Component: Use the appropriate formula for each solid’s surface area.
- Consider Overlapping Surfaces: When solids are combined, some surfaces may overlap or be hidden. These surfaces should not be included in the total surface area calculation.
- Add or Subtract the Areas: Add the surface areas of the components, and subtract any overlapping or hidden areas to find the total surface area of the composite figure.
