How to simplify an algebraic expression by adding or subtracting like terms?

There are three sets of simplifying algebraic expression worksheets.

  • Simplify Expressions (Two Terms)
  • Simplify Expressions (Three Terms)
  • Simplify Expressions (Four Terms)

To simplify expressions involving addition and subtraction, follow these steps:

  1. Identify and combine like terms: Like terms have the same variables raised to the same powers.
  2. Maintain the Sign of the Coefficient: When combining like terms, be sure to maintain the sign of the coefficient (the number in front of the variable).
  3. Combine Constants: Combine any constants (numbers without variables) in the expression.

Example: Simplify 5x - 3y - 2x + y + 9
Combine like terms with x: 5x - 2x = 3x
Combine like terms with y: - 3y + y = - 2y
Combine constants: 9
So, 5x - 3y - 2x + y + 9 simplifies to 3x - 2y + 9
