Free printable and online worksheets to help Grade 6 students learn about how to use tape diagrams to solve ratio word problems. Solve ratio word problems when the part-to-part ratio is given and the difference is given.

Solve Ratio Word Problems Given the Difference

Tape diagrams are a valuable tool for solving ratio problems, especially when dealing with difference.

1. Read the problem carefully. Take note of the given ratio (eg. 2:5) and the given difference (eg. 12 items).
   Identify what you need to find. It’s usually the individual quantities that make up the difference based on the given ratio.

2. Draw two rectangles to represent the two parts of the ratio.
   Divide each rectangle into a number of sections that reflects the given ratio.
   For example, if the ratio is 2:5, then divide one rectangle into 2 sections and the other into 5 sections.
   

3. The difference in length of the rectangles (eg. 5-2=3) would represent the difference quantity given in the problem.
   To find out the amount represented by one section: Divide the given difference (eg. 12) by the number of sections (eg. 12 ÷ 3 = 4).

4. We can then find the quantities represented by each rectangle by multiplying by the number of sections (eg, 2x4=8 and 3x4=20).
