Free printable and online worksheets to help Grade 6 students learn about how to use tape diagrams to find equivalent ratios. Solve equivalent ratio word problems when the part-to-part ratio is given and the value of one of the quantities is given.

- Understand the Problem:

Read the problem carefully. Take note of the ratio in parts (e.g., 2 nuts to 3 bolts) and the value of one of those parts (e.g., there are 12 nuts).

Identify what you need to find. It’s usually the value of the other quantity in the ratio. - Draw two tape diagrams representing the given ratio of the items being analyzed. (eg. one with 2 sections and one with 3 sections)
- Determine how many items are represented by one section of the tape. (eg. 2 sections represent 12 nuts and so 1 section represents 6 nuts)
- Count the number of sections represented by the unknown quantity. (eg. 3 sections to represent the bolts) 5: Multiply the number of sections found in step 4 by the number of items represented by each section found in step 3 to find the number of unknown items. (eg. 3 x 6 = 18)
