How to Convert Metric Measurements
To convert metric measurements using the decimal point movement method, we just need to move the decimal point:
Metric Conversion Lesson

  1. Convert to a smaller unit, multiply or move the decimal point to the right. For example, to convert from meters (base unit) to centimeters, you move two places to the right because “centi” is two places away from “unit.” So, 5 meters = 500 centimeters.
  2. Convert to a larger unit, divide or move the decimal point to the left. To convert from milligrams (“milli”) to grams (base unit), you move three places to the left. So, 1,500 milligrams = 1.5 grams.

This method is specific to the metric system, as it’s based on powers of 10. A helpful mnemonic for remembering the prefixes and their order is “King Henry Died Unexpectedly Drinking Chocolate Milk.” Each word represents a prefix, from largest to smallest:
Kilo (1,000)
Hecto (100)
Deka (10)
Unit (1) (e.g., meter, liter, gram)
Deci (0.1)
Centi (0.01)
Milli (0.001)

In this game, you may be asked any of the following:
Length:
from: ‘km’, to: ’m’, multiply by 1000,
from: ’m’, to: ‘km’, multiply by 0.001,
from: ’m’, to: ‘cm’, multiply by 100,
from: ‘cm’, to: ’m’, multiply by 0.01,
from: ‘cm’, to: ‘mm’, multiply by 10,
from: ‘mm’, to: ‘cm’, multiply by 0.1,
from: ’m’, to: ‘mm’, multiply by 1000,
from: ‘mm’, to: ’m’, multiply by 0.001,
Mass
from: ‘kg’, to: ‘g’, multiply by 1000,
from: ‘g’, to: ‘kg’, multiply by 0.001,
from: ‘g’, to: ‘mg’, multiply by 1000,
from: ‘mg’, to: ‘g’, multiply by 0.001,
Volume
from: ‘L’, to: ‘mL’, multiply by 1000,
from: ‘mL’, to: ‘L’, multiply by 0.001

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the process of metric conversion.
