Key Customary Conversion Factors
It’s helpful to have a chart or memorize the key relationships for each category:
Length
1 foot = 12 inches
1 yard = 3 feet
Weight
1 pound = 16 ounces
Capacity
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
1 pint = 2 cups
1 quart = 2 pints
1 gallon = 4 quarts

Step-by-Step Conversion Process

  1. Identify the conversion you need to make. For example, you want to convert 5 yards into inches.
  2. Determine if you’re going from a larger unit to a smaller unit, or vice versa. In this case, yards are larger than inches.
  3. Choose the correct operation:
    Larger to Smaller: Multiply.
    Smaller to Larger: Divide.
Since you are converting from yards to inches (larger to smaller), you will multiply.
  4. Find the conversion factor. You need to know how many inches are in a yard. This is a two-step conversion:
    1 yard = 3 feet
    1 foot = 12 inches
    Therefore, 1 yard = 3 feet x 12 inches/foot = 36 inches.
  5. Perform the calculation.
    5 yards x 36 inches/yard = 180 inches.
You can convert between customary units with this process, even for multi-step conversions like the one above.

In this game, you may be asked any of the following:
Length
from: ‘feet’, to: ‘inches’, multiply by 12
from: ‘yards’, to: ‘feet’, multiply by 3
from: ‘inches’, to: ‘feet’, multiply by 1/12
from: ‘feet’, to: ‘yards’, multiply by 1/3
Volume
from: ‘pints’, to: ‘cups’, multiply by 2
from: ‘quarts’, to: ‘pints’, multiply by 2
from: ‘gallons’, to: ‘quarts’, multiply by 4
from: ‘cups’, to: ‘pints’, multiply by 1/2
from: ‘pints’, to: ‘quarts’, multiply by 1/2
from: ‘quarts’, to: ‘gallons’, multiply by 1/4
Weight
from: ‘pounds’, to: ‘ounces’, multiply by 16
from: ‘ounces’, to: ‘pounds’, multiply by 1/16

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the process of customary measurement conversion.
