Students use the coordinate plane to graph points, line segments, and geometric shapes in the various quadrants and then use the absolute value to find the related distances.

Coordinate Plane (Horizontal & Vertical Distance)

Coordinate Plane Basics:

The coordinate plane is a two-dimensional surface where each point is defined by an ordered pair (x,y). The x-coordinate represents the horizontal position, and the y-coordinate represents the vertical position.

Horizontal Distance:
If the y-coordinates of the two points are the same then we can find the horizontal distance between two points by calculating the absolute difference between their x-coordinates.

Example:
Points A(3,4) and B(7,4)
Horizontal distance: |7 - 3| = 4

Points C(5,-8) and D(-10,-8)
Horizontal distance: |5-(-10)| = 15

Vertical Distance:
If the x-coordinates of the two points are the same then we can find the vertical distance between two points by calculating the absolute difference between their y-coordinates.

Example:
Points A(5,8) and B(5,12)
Horizontal distance: |8 - 12| = 4

Points C(-7,-4) and D(-7,-10)
Horizontal distance: |-4-(-10)| = 6
