Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 7 and Grade 8 learn how to write the equation of a straight line on the coordinate plane.
To find the equation of a straight line on the coordinate plane, follow these steps, depending on the information you have (e.g., slope, points, or intercepts).
Given the Slope and Y-Intercept: Use Slope-Intercept Form
The slope-intercept form is:
𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏
𝑚 is the slope (how steep the line is).
𝑏 is the y-intercept (the point where the line crosses the y-axis, i.e., when 𝑥 = 0).
Given the Slope and a Point on the Line: Use Point-Slope Form
The point-slope form is:
(𝑦 − 𝑦1) = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1)
𝑚 m is the slope of the line.
(𝑥1, 𝑦1) is a point on the line.
Given Two Points on the Line: Find the Slope, then Use Point-Slope Form
If you have two points (𝑥1, 𝑦1) and (𝑥2, 𝑦2)
Find the slope using the formula:
𝑚 = (𝑦2 − 𝑦1)/(𝑥2 − 𝑥1)
Use the slope 𝑚 and one of the points in the point-slope form
(𝑦 − 𝑦1) = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1)
The following diagram shows how to write an equation in slope-intercept form from the line.
