This Divide Scientific Notation Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Scientific Notation Division Game
To divide numbers in scientific notation, first divide the decimal parts (coefficients) of the numbers, and then subtract the exponents of the powers of 10. If the resulting coefficient is not a number between 1 and 10, adjust it by moving the decimal point and changing the exponent accordingly to put the final answer in proper scientific notation. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
This game should provide you with the practice you need to confidently divide numbers in scientific notation. The coefficients of the divisor are whole numbers. This is a great way to practice the fundamentals of dividing scientific notation. If you give a wrong answer, the game will provide the correct answer.

How to divide scientific notation numbers
The process has two simple parts: one for the coefficients and one for the exponents.
Divide Scientific Notation Numbers
Here’s the step-by-step method for dividing two numbers in scientific notation, such as (a×10n)×(b×10m)
Step 1: Divide the Coefficients
The first step is to divide the coefficients (the numbers in front of the powers of 10) just as you would any other numbers.
Example: Let’s divide (6.2×103)÷(2.0×105).
Divide the coefficients: 6.2÷2.0=3.1.
The result is 3.1×10?.
Step 2: Subtract the Exponents
The second step is to subtract the exponents of the powers of 10. This is a special rule for exponents that works when you’re dividing terms with the same base.
Using our example:
Add the exponents: 3-5=-2.
The result so far is 3.1×10-2.
The Final Step: Normalizing the Answer
The final answer must be in proper scientific notation, which means the coefficient must be a number between 1 and 10 (and can include 1 but not 10).
Our result from Step 2, 3.1×10-2, is already normalized because 3.1 is between 1 and 10. So, this is our final answer.
Summary of Rules
Coefficients: Divide them normally.
Exponents: Subtract them.
Normalize: Adjust the decimal point and exponent at the end if necessary.
