Strategies to divide 2-digit by 1-digit (with remainder)
Think Multiplication (Short Division)
This strategy is great for mental math. It focuses on finding the closest multiple of the divisor without going over.
Let’s use the problem: 25÷4

  1. Think multiplication. Think: “What number, when multiplied by 4, gets me as close as possible to 25 without going over?”
  2. You know that 6×4=24.
  3. You also know 7x4=28. That’s too high.
  4. Subtract. Now, subtract that product (24) from the dividend (25): 25-24=1. The result of this subtraction is the remainder. 5, The number you multiplied by (6) is your quotient, and the result of the subtraction (1) is your remainder. The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the process of dividing a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number using short division.
