Corresponding & Alternate Angles Game
These three angle relationships are key to understanding geometry when a transversal line intersects two other lines (often, but not always, parallel lines). Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
In this game, you will be required to find the Corresponding Angle, Alternate Interior Angle or Alternate Exterior Angle of the given angle in the diagram. Click on the correct angle. If you give a wrong answer, the game will ask you to try again.
How to Play the Corresponding & Alternate Angles Game
In this game, you need to find the matching angle: Corresponding, Alternate Interior or Alternate Exterior.
Here’s how to play:
Click “Start Game”.
The question prompt will tell you which angle to start from (e.g., Angle 3) and what relationship to use (e.g., Corresponding).
The starting angle will be highlighted in yellow.
Click on the number of the angle on the diagram that matches the requested relationship.
If correct, the clicked angle turn green, your score increases, and a new question loads.
If incorrect, the clicked angle flashes red and you can try again.
You can also skip the question and the score will reset to 0.
Corresponding Angles Corresponding Angles
Definition: Corresponding angles are the angles that sit in the same relative position at each intersection where the transversal crosses the parallel lines. Think of them as sitting in the same corner.
Location: One angle is on the exterior (outside the parallel lines) and one is on the interior (between the parallel lines). Both are on the same side of the transversal.
Property (when lines are parallel): Corresponding angles are equal (congruent).
A common way to remember corresponding angles is to look for an “F” shape (which can be normal, inverted, or reversed) formed by the two lines and the transversal. The angles inside the “F” that are in the same relative position are corresponding angles.
Alternate Interior Angles Alternate Angles
Definition: Alternate interior angles are on opposite (alternate) sides of the transversal and are both located between (interior) the two parallel lines.
Location: Both angles are in the interior region (between the parallel lines). They are on opposite sides of the transversal.
Property (when lines are parallel): Alternate interior angles are equal (congruent).
A common visual trick to identify alternate interior angles is to look for a “Z” shape (or a backward “Z”) formed by the lines and the transversal. The angles in the “corners” of the “Z” are alternate interior angles.
Alternate Exterior Angles
Definition: Alternate exterior angles are on opposite (alternate) sides of the transversal and are both located outside (exterior) the two parallel lines.
Location: Both angles are in the exterior region (outside the parallel lines). They are on opposite sides of the transversal.
Property (when lines are parallel): Alternate exterior angles are equal (congruent).
