How to find the area of a polygon by decomposition?

There are two sets of area of polygon worksheets.

  • Area of a polygon by decomposing into rectangles
  • Area of a polygon by decomposing into triangles & rectangles.

To find the area of a polygon by decomposition, you can break the polygon into smaller, simpler shapes (typically triangles or rectangles), calculate the area of each of these smaller shapes, and then sum up their areas to find the total area of the polygon.

Here are the steps:

  1. Divide the polygon into simpler shapes: Look for lines within the polygon that you can use to divide it into triangles or rectangles. These shapes should be easy to calculate the area for.
  2. Calculate the area of each simpler shape: For triangles, use the formula (1/2) × base × height. For rectangles, use length × width.
  3. Sum up the areas of all the simpler shapes: Add up the areas of all the triangles and rectangles you’ve divided the polygon into.
