Vowel E Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Vowel E Worksheet/Game. This game is designed to help players distinguish between the Short e and Long e vowel sounds. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

The vowel “e” sound changes depending on the letters surrounding it. In English, we primarily distinguish between the Short e and the Long e.

  1. Listen and Read
When a new word appears in the center box, the game will automatically say it aloud.
Visual: Read the word in large, uppercase letters.
Audio: If you missed the sound or want to hear it again, click the Speaker (🔊) button in the bottom-right corner of the word box.

  2. Identify the Sound
You must decide which “e” sound you hear in the word:
Short e: Sounds like the “eh” in egg or bed.
Long e: Sounds like the letter name itself, “EE,” as in tree or leaf.

  3. Choose Your Answer
    Click the corresponding button:
    Emerald Button: Short e
    Sky Blue Button: Long e

  4. Feedback and Scoring
If you are correct: You will hear a high-pitched “ding,” a star (🌟) will appear, and the game will move to the next word after a short pause.
If you are incorrect: You will hear a lower “thump.” The score will update (e.g., 0/1), and a “Need a Hint?” button will appear.
Hints: Clicking the hint will give you an example sound or a spelling rule (like “ee” or “ea” usually making the long sound) to help you get it right on the next try.

  5. Goal
Work your way through the 30 randomized words in the bank. Your final accuracy score will be displayed at the end of the game!

The Short Vowel “e”

Consonant Blends: Step, West, Send.

The Long Vowel “e”

Common Patterns: Unlike the short “e,” the long “e” is often created by “Vowel Teams” or specific spelling rules.
Double E: Tree, Bee, Feet.
EA Team: Leaf, Meat, Beach.
Long E at the end: Me, We, She.
Silent E (Magic E): Theme, Gene.
