Value of a Ratio & Equivalent Ratios

Value of a Ratio:

  • The value of a ratio refers to a number that represents the proportion between the two quantities being compared.
  • It’s calculated by dividing the first number (numerator) in the ratio by the second number (denominator).
  • For example, if the ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:5, the value of the ratio is 3/5, indicating that there are 3 boys for every 5 girls.

Equivalent Ratios

  • Ratios that represent the same comparison but with different numbers are equivalent ratios.
  • To find equivalent ratios, multiply or divide both quantities in the ratio by the same nonzero number.
  • Example: The ratio 2:3 is equivalent to the ratio 4:6 because both ratios represent the same proportion (2/3).
