Upper & Lower Bound Calculations Game/Worksheet
Welcome to the Upper & Lower Bound Calculations Challenge! This game helps students learn how to calculate the absolute maximum and minimum possible results, the Upper and Lower Bounds, for a variety of formulas across different mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In mathematics and error analysis, to find the absolute extreme limits of a formula, you must combine the maximum or minimum possible values of its inputs. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
Analyze the Matrix: Each round, the game displays a system equation (such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) alongside two measured variables.
Step 1 – Find the Lower Bound: Calculate the absolute smallest possible outcome for the formula based on the numbers provided. Type your answer into the field and click Validate Lower Bound (or press Enter).
Step 2 – Find the Upper Bound: Once your lower bound is verified, the upper bound field unlocks. Calculate the absolute largest possible outcome, type it in, and click Validate Upper Bound.
Review the Log: Win or lose, the terminal generates an operational analysis log showing the exact range profiles and the compounding path mathematical step-by-step solutions to help you learn from any mistakes.
Score Points: Successfully clearing a matrix awards you 200 points and advances you to a new randomly generated problem.
How the Math Works
To master the game, you must first find the limits of the individual variables, and then strategically pair them based on the formula’s operator.
Part 1: Finding the Precision and GPE
Before looking at the formula, find the boundaries of each individual measurement using its Greatest Possible Error (GPE). Look at the last decimal place of the value:
If a value is written as 15 (nearest whole number), its precision is 1. The GPE is half of that: ± 0.5.
If a value is written as 6.8 (nearest tenth), its precision is 0.1. The GPE is half of that: ± 0.05.
Apply the GPE to establish the individual bounds:
Lower Bound (LB) = Measurement - GPE
Upper Bound (UB) = Measurement + GPE
Part 2: Compounding the Formula Bounds
Once you have the individual bounds for Variable 1 (V1) and Variable 2 (V2), combine them according to the formula type. Watch out for the mathematical trap in subtraction and division.
| Operation Type | To Calculate the Formula Lower Bound | To Calculate the Formula Upper Bound |
|---|---|---|
| ➕ Addition | Add the minimums together: V1LB + V2LB |
Add the maximums together: V1UB + V2UB |
| ✖️ Multiplication | Multiply the minimums together: V1LB × V2LB |
Multiply the maximums together: V1UB × V2UB |
| ➖ Subtraction | Take the smallest, subtract the biggest: V1LB - V2UB |
Take the biggest start, subtract the smallest chunk: V1UB - V2LB |
| ➗ Division | Divide the smallest numerator by the largest denominator: V1LB ÷ V2UB |
Divide the largest numerator by the smallest denominator: V1UB ÷ V2LB |
