Time Zones Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Time Zones Worksheet/Game. Your goal is to calculate the arrival time of flights moving between different world cities across various time zones. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Time Zones Game

  1. Choose Your Interface
When the game starts, you must select a Interface (Time Format):
12 Hour Clock: Uses AM/PM logic.
24 Hour Clock: Uses military time (00:00 to 23:59).
Mixed: A combination of both to test your mental flexibility.

  2. Analyze the Mission Data
Each round provides three key pieces of information:
Departure City & Time: Where the flight is leaving from and its local time.
Flight Duration: How long the plane is in the air.
Destination City & UTC Offset: The city you are flying to and its time zone difference (e.g., London is UTC 0, New York is UTC -5).

  3. Calculate the Arrival
To find the correct answer, follow this mental workflow:
Convert to UTC: Subtract the origin city’s offset from the departure time to find the “universal” time.
Add Flight Time: Add the duration of the trip to that UTC time.
Adjust to Local Time: Add the destination city’s offset to the result.
Account for the Day: If the time goes past 24:00, it wraps around to the next day. If it goes below 00:00, it wraps back to the previous day.

  4. Controls & Scoring
Input: Type the Hour and Minute into the center boxes.
AM/PM Toggle: If you are in 12h mode, click the AM/PM button to switch between them.
Check Answer: Click “Check” to verify your calculation.
Streak: Every correct answer on your first attempt increases your streak.
Incorrect Answers: If you get it wrong, your streak resets to 0. However, the game will lock the inputs and show a “Try Again” button, allowing you to re-calculate the same problem until you get it right.

Example:
The Scenario
Origin: Singapore (UTC +8)
Departure Time: 22:00 (10:00 PM)
Flight Duration: 12 hours
Destination: San Francisco (UTC -8)

Step 1: Find the “Universal Time” (UTC)
Singapore is 8 hours ahead of UTC. To get back to the universal base time, you must subtract those 8 hours from the departure time.
22:00 - 8 hours = 14:00 UTC

Step 2: Add the Flight Duration
The plane travels for 12 hours. Add this to the UTC departure time.
14:00 + 12 hours = 26:00 UTC
(Note: Since 26:00 is greater than 24, this means it is 02:00 UTC the following day.)

Step 3: Adjust to Destination Local Time
San Francisco is 8 hours behind UTC. Subtract 8 hours from your arrival UTC.
02:00 (next day) - 8 hours = 18:00 (original day)
Final Answer (24h Mode): 18:00
Final Answer (12h Mode): 6:00 PM

The “Time Difference” Shortcut
This is often faster for your brain during the game:
Calculate the Gap: San Francisco (-8) is 16 hours behind Singapore (+8).
Calculation: (-8) - (+8) = -16
Add Duration: Take the Departure Time (22:00) + Flight Duration (12h) = 34:00.
Apply the Gap: 34:00 - 16 hours = 18:00.

Why did the time go “backwards”?In this specific example, because the flight was 12 hours long but the time zone difference was 16 hours, you actually land “before” you technically left according to the clock—a common phenomenon when flying from Asia to the Americas.
