The Parts of a Subtraction Equation
    In an equation like 10−4=6:
The first number (10) is the minuend. This is the total number of objects you start with.
The second number (4) is the subtrahend. This is the number of objects you need to take away.
The answer (6) is the difference. This is the number of objects you have left over.

    Step-by-Step Example
Let’s solve the problem 9−5=? using nine objects.
Step 1: Set out the minuend.
The equation tells us to start with the minuend, which is 9. You should set out nine objects in front of you.
Step 2: Take away the subtrahend.
Next, the equation tells you to subtract 5. This means you need to physically remove, or “take away,” five objects from your group of nine.
    Step 3: Count the difference.
Now, count how many objects you have left. The number you count is the answer to the equation. In this case, you are left with four objects.
Therefore, your equation is completed: 9−5=4.
