Subtract m and cm Game
This Subtract m and cm Game is a subtraction game where you are tasked with finding the remaining length after a “cut” is made. You must know how to borrow from the meter column when the centimeters aren’t enough. Since 1 m = 100 cm, you must learn to borrow a “hundred” instead of a “ten.” Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Subtract m and cm Game

  1. Check the Centimeters (cm)
Look at the top number of centimeters and the bottom number.
If the top number is larger, subtract as usual.
If the top number is smaller, you don’t have enough centimeters to make the cut. You must borrow from the meters.

  2. The Exchange
In the metric system, 1 meter} = 100 centimeters. This is an important rule in the game.
    When you borrow 1 m:
Reduce the top meter by 1.
Add 100 to your top centimeter box.

  3. Subtract and Solve
Now that your top centimeter number is much larger (it will be over 100), you can finish the math:
    Subtract the cm first.
    Subtract the remaining m second.

Example
Imagine your task is: 5 m 20 cm minus 2 m 85 cm
Step 1: The Problem
You can’t take 85 cm away if you only have 20 cm.
Step 2: Borrow
Borrow 1 m from the 5 m. The top meter becomes 4.Give those 100 cm to the 20 cm. The top centimeter box now has 120.
Step 3: Subtract
cm: 120 - 85 = 35 cm
m: 4 - 2 = 2 m
Final Answer: 2 m 35 cm.
