Welcome to the Stem & Leaf Plot Challenge! This game is an interactive math game designed to help you learn how to use a stem-and-leaf plot, which is mathematical tool that organizes data by splitting each number into two distinct parts to reveal hidden shapes, trends, and averages at a single glance. A stem-and-leaf plot works by separating data by place value so you can see the distribution of data points without losing the original numbers. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
The game is structured as a 10-stage diagnostics run. Each stage presents a new scenario and a fresh dataset plotted on your dashboard.
Read the Plot: Look at the organized table in the center of the panel. The left side displays the Stems (the leading digits), and the right side displays the Leaves (the final digits).
Analyze the Objective: Look at the top prompt to see what metric the system is asking for. You might be asked to find a basic value, calculate a boundary, or compute a statistical center.
Select Your Answer: Choose from the multiple-choice matrix at the bottom.
Review the Proof: Winning a round adds 100 points to your score, but regardless of whether you get it right or wrong, an educational overlay will immediately pop up to break down the calculation step-by-step.
How the Math Works
A stem-and-leaf plot works by separating data by place value so you can see the distribution of data points without losing the original numbers.
Decoding the Key (Place Value)
Every plot includes a Key that acts as your decoder ring. For example, if the key reads 5 | 2 equals 52, it tells you that the Stem represents the tens place value and the Leaf represents the ones place value.To reconstruct any individual data point, simply slide a stem and a leaf together. If you see a stem of 6 paired with a leaf of 8, that data point is 68.
Reading Basic Boundaries (Minimum & Maximum)
Because the leaves in each row are automatically sorted from least to greatest, finding boundaries is entirely visual:The Minimum: Look at the very first row at the top. The first leaf right next to the lowest stem is your absolute smallest number.The Maximum: Look at the bottom row. The final leaf on the far right edge represents your absolute largest number.
Calculating the Range
The Range measures how widely spread out your data is. Once you spot your maximum and minimum values using the trick above, you use the range formula:
Range = Maximum - Minimum
For instance, if your highest data point is 95 and your lowest is 41, your range is 95 - 41 = 54.
The Median: The median is the exact middle value of the dataset. To find it, imagine crossing out the numbers from the outside in—one from the very top left, one from the very bottom right—moving sequentially inward until you land on the single digit resting dead center. If two digits share the center, you simply average them together.
