Simple Probability Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Simple Probability Worksheet/Game. Simple probability is the measure of the likelihood that a single, specific event will occur, expressed as a number between 0 (impossible) and 1 (certain). It is calculated by dividing the number of favorable outcomes by the total number of possible outcomes. This game is designed to test your ability to calculate the likelihood of different outcomes of a single event. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to play the Simple Probability Worksheet/Game
Read the Scenario: A question will appear at the top describing a situation (e.g., pulling a marble from a bag or rolling a die).
Choose Your Answer: Click on one of the four options in the grid.
Green Highlight: You chose correctly! Your score and the progress bar will increase.
Red Highlight: That was incorrect. The game will highlight the correct answer in green so you can learn for the next round.
Advance: Click the Next Question ➜ button to move forward.
Complete the Challenge: Face all 30 randomly shuffled questions to see your final accuracy score.
The Core Formula
To win the game, you need to remember the fundamental rule of probability for a single event. You are essentially creating a fraction:
\(P(\text{event}) = \frac{\text{Number of successful outcomes}}{\text{Total number of possible outcomes}}\)
Example Scenarios:
· The Die Roll: A standard die has 6 sides. If asked for the probability of rolling a “5,” there is only 1 successful outcome out of 6 total possibilities (1/6).
· The Marble Bag: If a bag has 3 red and 7 blue marbles, the total number of outcomes is 10. The probability of picking red is 3/10.
· The Card Deck: A standard deck has 52 cards. Since there are 4 Kings in a deck, the probability of picking one is 4/52, which simplifies to 1/13.
Tips
· Look for “NOT”: Some questions ask for the probability of an event not happening. For these, subtract the successful outcomes from the total.
Example: If 5 out of 15 candies are mint, then 10 are not mint (10/15 or 2/3).
· Simplify (Sometimes): The game often uses unsimplified fractions (like 26/52) to help you see the relationship between the items and the total, but sometimes it uses simplified ones (like 1/2).
· Watch the Words: Pay attention to “Even,” “Odd,” “Prime,” or “Greater than.” These require you to count how many numbers in the set fit that specific description.
