Scientific Notation Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Scientific Notation Worksheet/Game. This game is designed to help you master Scientific Notation through two specific missions: learn the rule for the coefficient and then learn the full conversion. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Scientific Notation Game
Mission 01: Repair Coefficient
This mode focuses exclusively on the Coefficient (a).
The Rule: In scientific notation, the coefficient must be a number where the absolute value is at least 1 but less than 10 (1 ≤ |a| < 10).
How to Play:

  1. Validate: Look at the number in the center. If it doesn’t follow the rule (e.g., 450 or 0.02), click Invalid.
  2. Repair: You will be asked to provide the “Corrected” version of a. Move the decimal point until only one non-zero digit is to the left of it. Example: For 450, the repair is 4.5.

Mission 02: Full Conversion
This is the advanced mode where you handle the entire equation: a × 10n.
The Rule: You must find both the correct Coefficient (a) and the correct Exponent (n).
How to Play:
Validate: Same as Module 01.
Correction: Enter the repaired coefficient in the first box (a) and the power of 10 in the small raised box (n).
Positive n: If you moved the decimal to the left (for large numbers).
Negative n: If you moved the decimal to the right (for tiny decimals).

Game Mechanics & Tips
The Streak: Every correct answer adds to your streak. If you get an “Analysis” question wrong (approving a number that is actually incorrect), your streak resets to zero.
Visual Feedback:
Green Background: Correct! The next problem will load automatically.
Red Background: Error. Read the “Reason” text at the bottom to see what went wrong.
Shaking Box: If your repair is wrong, the box will shake. You can edit your answer and try again without losing your current streak.
Scale: Remember that in scientific notation, there is always exactly one non-zero digit to the left of the decimal point.

How to convert to Scientific Notation?
To convert a number into scientific notation, you follow a simple two-step process: finding the coefficient and determining the exponent.

The Goal
Your final answer must look like this:
a × 10n
a: The coefficient (must be between 1 and 10).
n: The exponent (how many times the decimal moved).

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Move the Decimal Point
Move the decimal point in the original number until there is exactly one non-zero digit to its left. This resulting number is your coefficient (a).

  2. Count the “Jumps”
Count how many places you moved the decimal point. This number will be your exponent (n).

  3. Determine the Sign of the Exponent
Positive (+): If the original number was large (greater than 10) and you moved the decimal to the left.
Negative (-): If the original number was a small decimal (less than 1) and you moved the decimal to the right.

Examples
Example A: A Large Number (45,000)
Move the decimal from the end: 4.5000 (moved 4 places).
The coefficient is 4.5.
Because we moved left from a large number, the exponent is +4.
Result: 4.5× 104

Example B: A Small Decimal (0.00023)
Move the decimal to the right: 2.3 (moved 4 places).
The coefficient is 2.3.
Because we moved right from a tiny decimal, the exponent is -4.
Result: 2.3× 10-4
