Rounding Word Problems

Rounding a number involves approximating it to a specified place value.

Method 1: Use halfway mark

You can use the halfway mark as a guide to round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and so on.

- Decide the place value you want to round to (e.g., tens, hundreds, thousands).
- Find the halfway mark between the two rounding points.
- If the original number is equal to or greater than the halfway mark, round up. If the original number is less than the halfway mark, round down.

Method 2: Examine the digit to the right

- Determine the digit in the given number that corresponds to the place value you want to round to
- Look at the digit immediately to the right of the identified digit. If it is 5 or greater, round the identified digit up by 1. If it is less than 5, leave the identified digit unchanged.
- Change all digits to the right of the identified digit to 0.
