How to rearrange a formula?

Rearranging a formula involves isolating a specific variable on one side of the equation. This is often necessary to solve for a particular unknown value.

Here’s a general approach:

  1. Identify the variable you want to isolate.
  2. Use inverse operations to isolate the variable.
  3. Use addition or subtraction as needed.
    To undo addition, subtract.
    To undo subtraction, add.
  4. Undo multiplication or division as needed.
    To undo multiplication, divide.
    To undo division, multiply.
  5. Apply inverse operations for exponents, roots, or other functions, if present.
  6. Maintain equality by performing each operation on both sides of the equation.
