Welcome to Place Value Master. In this game, your goal is to look at a large number and determine the place value of the underlined digit based on its position: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to play the Place Value Game
Look for the Underlined Digit
A large number will appear in the center. One digit will be orange and underlined. This is your target.
Example: In \(4\underline{7}\),210, the 7 is your target.
Count from the Right
To find the place value, always start at the very last digit on the right and move left:
Ones: The first digit on the right.
Tens: The second digit.
Hundreds: The third digit.
Thousands: The fourth digit (just past the first comma).
Ten Thousands: The fifth digit.
Hundred Thousands: The sixth digit.
Select the Correct Place Value
Click one of the four buttons at the bottom that matches the position of the underlined digit.
If you are right: The button turns green, you’ll hear a happy chime, and you can move to the next number.
If you are wrong: The button turns red, and you can try again.
Use this guide to help you recognize the place values faster:

Why it Matters
Identifying the place value is the first step to understanding expanded form.
For example, if you know the 5 is in the Hundred Thousands place, you know it actually represents 500,000.
