Permutation/Combination Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Permutation/Combination Worksheet/Game. This game is a diagnostic challenge designed to help you distinguish between Permutations and Combinations. The core gameplay revolves around one fundamental question: Does the order of the items matter? Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

  1. Analyze the Mission Briefing
When a new problem appears in the center console, identify the two key variables:
n (The Pool): Highlighted in indigo. This is the total number of items available.
r (The Selection): Also in indigo. This is how many items you are picking or arranging.

  2. Identify the Logic (The “P vs C” Rule)
Before you look at the numbers, you must decide which math “rule” applies to the scenario:
    Permutations (P)
    The Rule: Order matters.
Keywords: Arranging, Ranks (1st, 2nd, 3rd), Specific Roles (President, Secretary), Passwords/Codes.
Concept: AB is different from BA.

    Combinations (C)
    The Rule: Order doesn’t matter.
Keywords: Selecting a group, Committees, Toppings, Handfuls, Handshakes.
Concept: AB is the same as BA.

  3. Deployment & Feedback
Select your answer: Choose from the grid of four buttons.
Success: If correct, you’ll hear a high-pitched chime, the button turns Emerald, and your score increases.
Error: If incorrect, you’ll hear a low-frequency buzz, the button turns Deep Rose, and the Hint Box will deploy.

  4. Using the Hint Box
The hint box will show the specific formula needed for that exact problem:
Permutation Hint: Shows the multiplication “slots” (n × (n-1) …).
Combination Hint: Shows the fraction where you divide the permutation by the factorial of r.
Use the hint to recalculate and select the correct answer to move on to the next challenge.
