Perimeter using a Grid Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Perimeter using a Grid Challenge! This geometry game is designed to sharpen your spatial and mathematical skills. In this game, your task is to analyze various 2D shapes plotted on a grid layout and calculate their total perimeter. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play

  1. Examine the Shape:
When a new round begins, a unique green-shaded shape will appear on the central 10x10 grid. The dark green line highlights the exact outer boundary of the figure.

  2. Count the Units:
Each side of a single grid square counts as 1 unit. Carefully count the total number of outer line segments that make up the shape’s exterior border. Keep in mind that inner walls where squares touch do not count toward the perimeter.

  3. Pick Your Answer:
Below the grid, you will see four multiple-choice buttons displaying different unit totals. Click or tap the number you believe matches the perimeter.

  4. Instant Feedback:
If you are correct: The button turns bright green, a cheerful, rising tone plays, and your score streak increases by 1. A “Next Perimeter Challenge ➔” button will appear so you can move forward at your own pace.
If you are incorrect: The button turns red, a low buzzer sounds, and the game highlights the correct answer in green so you can learn from your mistake. Making an error will reset your current score streak back to 0. The game will automatically load the next shape after 3 seconds.

  5. Track Your Success:
Monitor the Score display at the top left to see how many correct answers you can string together in a row. The Progress tracker shows your position through the current 5-shape rotation before the deck shuffles to give you a fresh set of challenges.

Prevents the Common “Area vs. Perimeter” Confusion
One of the most persistent hurdles in elementary geometry is confusing area (the space inside a shape) with perimeter (the distance around it).
The game specifically combats this by shading the inside light green but tracing the outer boundary with a heavy, dark green line.
This visual scaffolding trains the player’s eyes to disregard the total number of blocks (area) and focus entirely on the outer edge segments (perimeter).
