This Order of Parentheses Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Order of Parentheses Quiz/Game
Welcome to Parentheses Power. In this game, you goal is to master the Order of Operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS). You aren’t just looking for the final answer; you are showing how to solve it one step at a time.
This game helps you master the parentheses rule: parentheses indicate the highest priority in the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS), requiring that calculations inside them are performed first. When nested, solve from the innermost parentheses to the outermost. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Check out the following Order of Operations Games/Quizzes for the complete PEMDAS series.
How to play the Order of Parentheses Game
Step 1. Choose Your Challenge
When you launch the game, you’ll pick from three modes:
Simple Parentheses: Basic grouping (e.g., 5 × (2 + 3)).
With & Without: Teaches you how much a pair of brackets actually changes the value of an equation.
Nested Challenge: The “Boss Level” where parentheses are inside other parentheses.
Step 2. The Core Rule: “Inside-Out”
The game follows the PEMDAS/BODMAS hierarchy, but with a specific focus on Parentheses.
In the Nested Challenge, you must solve the innermost brackets first.
Step 3. How to Play (Step-by-Step)
You do not type just the final number. You must type the entire equation as it looks after solving exactly one part.
Example Problem: 3 × ( 10 - ( 4 + 2 ) )
Step 4. Winning and Losing
Streaks: Every time you complete a full problem perfectly, your 🔥 Streak goes up.
Feedback:
✅ Correct: You’ll hear a high-pitched chime and the equation will move to the “History” section above.
❌ Wrong: If you try to multiply before clearing the brackets, the game will play a low “thud” sound and reset your streak to zero.
Tip
If you are playing Nested Mode, look for the parentheses that have no other parentheses inside them. That is always your starting point.
