Order of Operations Game (),+,-,×

In the order of operations, parentheses are always evaluated first, followed by exponents, then multiplication and division (from left to right), and finally, addition and subtraction (from left to right). This order is often remembered by the acronym PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. Scroll down the page if you need a more detailed explanation.

As an introduction to PEMDAS, this game will have addition, subtraction, multiplication, and parenthesis. The user can select whether to include parenthesis and the number of terms. It also has a 60-second timer, encouraging players to solve the problems quickly and efficiently.

How to use PEMDAS
PEMDAS is a mnemonic device used to remember the order of operations in mathematics.

Order of Operations (PEMDAS) Lesson
Parentheses (( ))
You always start by solving anything inside parentheses first. If there are nested parentheses, solve the innermost ones first.
Exponents (xn)
Next, you solve any numbers with exponents. An exponent tells you to multiply a number by itself a certain number of times.
Multiplication (×) and Division (÷)
After parentheses and exponents, you perform all multiplication and division from left to right, whichever comes first. They have equal priority.
Addition (+) and Subtraction (−)
Finally, you perform all addition and subtraction from left to right, whichever comes first. They also have equal priority.

Example
In this game, you will need to practice with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and parenthesis. Remember to solve anything inside parentheses first, multiplication and then perform all addition and subtraction from left to right.
Let’s solve the problem 3+(10-6)×10.

  1. Parentheses: First, solve the expression inside the parentheses: (10-6)=4.
    The problem becomes: 10+4×10.
  2. Exponents: There are no exponents in this problem, so we can skip this step.
  3. Multiplication and Division: We need to multiply first:4×10 = 40. The problem becomes 3 + 40
  4. Addition and Subtraction (from left to right): Perform the addition to get: 3 + 40 = 43
So, the correct answer is 43.
