Multiply Decimals by Whole Numbers Lesson
Step 1: Multiply as if there are no decimals
First, ignore the decimal point completely. Just set up the problem and multiply the numbers like you would with whole numbers.
Example: Let’s solve 3.4×5.
We’ll ignore the decimal for now and multiply 34×5.
34×5=170.
Step 2: Count the decimal places
Now, go back to the original problem (3.4×5) and count the number of digits that come after the decimal point in the decimal number.
In 3.4, there is one digit after the decimal point (the digit 4).
The whole number, 5, has zero digits after a decimal.
The total number of decimal places is 1+0=1.
Step 3: Place the decimal point
Take the answer you got in Step 1 (which was 170) and place the decimal point so that it has the same number of decimal places you counted in Step 2.
We counted 1 decimal place.
Start from the right side of 170 and move the decimal point one place to the left.
So, the final answer is 17.0, or just 17.
The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the process of multiplying decimals by whole numbers.
