Multiply Scientific Notation Worksheets

How to multiply numbers in scientific notation?

There are two sets of multiplying numbers in scientific notation worksheets.

• Multiply numbers in scientific notation (positive exponents).
• Multiply numbers in scientific notation (include negative exponents)

These are the steps to multiply numbers in scientific notation:

1. Multiply the coefficients of the numbers.
2. Add the exponents of the numbers.
3. Adjust the result to scientific notation if needed.

Example: (4.5 x 10³) × (2.3 x 10²)

1. Multiply the coefficients: 4.5 × 2.3 = 10.35
2. Add the exponents: 10³ × 10² = 10⁽³⁺²⁾ = 10⁵
3. Adjust to scientific notation if needed: 10.35 × 10⁵ = 1.035 × 10⁶

Example: (2.1 x 10^-4) × (3.5 x 10²)

1. Multiply the coefficients: 2.1 × 7 = 14.7
2. Add the exponents: 10⁰⁴ × 10² = 10^(-4+2) = 10^-2
3. Adjust to scientific notation if needed: 14.7 × 10^-2 = 1.47 × 10^-1
