How to divide numbers in scientific notation?

There are two sets of dividing numbers in scientific notation worksheets.

  • Divide numbers in scientific notation (positive exponents).
  • Divide numbers in scientific notation (include negative exponents)

These are the steps to divide numbers in scientific notation:

  1. Divide the coefficients of the numbers.
  2. Subtract the exponents of the numbers.
  3. Adjust the result to scientific notation if needed.

Example: (3.5 x 105) ÷ (2 x 102)

  1. Divide the coefficients: 3.5 ÷ 2 = 1.75
  2. Subtract the exponents: 105 ÷ 102 = 10(5-2) = 103
  3. Adjust to scientific notation if needed: 10.35 ÷ 105 = 1.035 ÷ 106

Example: (2.1 x 10-4) ÷ (3.5 x 102)

  1. Divide the coefficients: 2.1 ÷ 7 = 14.7
  2. Subtract the exponents: 1004 ÷ 102 = 10(-4+2) = 10-2
  3. Adjust to scientific notation if needed: 14.7 ÷ 10-2 = 1.47 ÷ 10-1
