How to divide numbers in scientific notation?

There are two sets of dividing numbers in scientific notation worksheets.

• Divide numbers in scientific notation (positive exponents).
• Divide numbers in scientific notation (include negative exponents)

These are the steps to divide numbers in scientific notation:

1. Divide the coefficients of the numbers.
2. Subtract the exponents of the numbers.
3. Adjust the result to scientific notation if needed.

Example: (3.5 x 10⁵) ÷ (2 x 10²)

1. Divide the coefficients: 3.5 ÷ 2 = 1.75
2. Subtract the exponents: 10⁵ ÷ 10² = 10^(5-2) = 10³
3. Adjust to scientific notation if needed: 10.35 ÷ 10⁵ = 1.035 ÷ 10⁶

Example: (2.1 x 10^-4) ÷ (3.5 x 10²)

1. Divide the coefficients: 2.1 ÷ 7 = 14.7
2. Subtract the exponents: 10⁰⁴ ÷ 10² = 10^(-4+2) = 10^-2
3. Adjust to scientific notation if needed: 14.7 ÷ 10^-2 = 1.47 ÷ 10^-1
