Multiplying a 3-digit number (the multiplicand) by a 3-digit number (the multiplier) follows the same logic as as multiplying a 3-digit by a 2-digit: you multiply the top number by the ones, by the tens, and then by the hundreds and add them together.
Multiplication (3-digit x 3-digit)
This Multiplication (3-digit x 3-digit) is an interactive and engaging web-based application designed to help you practice your multiplication skills.
Multiplying two 3-digit numbers might seem daunting at first, but it is essentially just a series of smaller multiplication steps added together. This method is known as Long Multiplication or The Standard Algorithm. It is the most efficient way to multiply, but it requires careful “bookkeeping” with regrouping (carrying) and placeholders. Scroll down the page if you need a more detailed explanation.
How to Play the Multiplication Game (3-digit x 3-digit)
This game is designed to help you practice your Multiplication (3-digit x 3-digit) skills in a fun environment. It has two levels of difficulty: “No Regrouping” and “With Regrouping”.
Here’s how to play:
3-Digit by 3-Digit Multiplication
Multiplying two 3-digit numbers might seem daunting at first, but it is essentially just a series of smaller multiplication steps added together.
The Setup
Let’s use the example: 324 × 152
Step 1: Multiply by the Ones Place
Multiply the top number (324) by the digit in the ones place of the bottom number (2).
2 × 4 = 8
2 × 2 = 4
2 × 3 = 6
Result: 648
Step 2: Multiply by the Tens Place
Before multiplying by the tens digit (5), you must place a zero in the ones column of your second row. This acts as a placeholder because you are actually multiplying by 50, not just 5.
5 × 4 = 20 (Write 0, carry the 2)
5 × 2 = 10, plus the carried 2 = 12 (Write 2, carry the 1)
5 × 3 = 15, plus the carried 1 = 16
Result: 16,200
Step 3: Multiply by the Hundreds Place
Now multiply by the hundreds digit (1). This time, place two zeros as placeholders because you are multiplying by 100.
1 × 4 = 4
1 × 2 = 2
1 × 3 = 3
Result: 32,400
Step 4: Add the Partial Products
Finally, add all three rows together to get your final answer.648 + 16,200 + 32,400 = 49,248
The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the process of multiplying a 3-digit number by 3-digit number using Standard Algorithm.
