Find missing addends with sums less than 20.

A missing addend refers to a number that is not given in an addition problem but needs to be determined to complete the equation. Understanding and solving problems with missing addends is an important skill in elementary mathematics.

Some useful strategies are count on, subtraction, use known facts, and make ten.

Strategies to Find Missing Addends:

  1. Counting Up: Start with the given number and count up to the sum.
  2. Subtraction: Teach students that subtraction is the inverse operation of addition. If they know the total and one of the addends, they can subtract to find the missing addend.
  3. Using Known Facts: Encourage students to use their knowledge of known addition facts to find missing addends.
  4. Make Ten: Use the number pairs that make ten to find the missing addend. 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5
