Make Rectangles with a Given Area Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Make Rectangles with a Given Area Challenge! This game bridges the gap between multiplication and geometry. In this challenge, your goal is to arrange unit squares into a rectangle that matches a specific Target Area. By exploring different dimensions, you’ll see firsthand how area is a product of length and width. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
Your mission is to construct a rectangle with the exact area requested.
Analyze the Target: Look at the Target Area displayed at the top. This is the total number of unit squares your rectangle must cover.
Design Your Rectangle: Click the cells in the grid to activate them. Since you are building a rectangle, you need to think about factors. For example, if your target is 12, you could build a 3 × 4 rectangle, a 2 × 6 rectangle, or even a 6 × 2 vertical tower.
Rule of Solidity: Your shape must be a solid rectangle. If there are “holes” in the middle, missing corners, or extra squares sticking out of the sides, the geometry check will fail.
Validate Geometry: Once you’ve finished your build, click Check Geometry.
Perfect Build: If the area matches and the shape is a solid rectangle, you’ll earn a gold star and increase your streak.
Adjustments Needed: If your shape is the wrong size or isn’t a rectangle, the game will give you feedback so you can fix your design.
Clear and Reset: Use the Clear button if you want to wipe the grid and try a different set of dimensions for the same target number.
Strategy Tip
Before you start clicking, try to find two numbers that multiply together to equal the target area. Those numbers will be your length and width.
Why is this game helpful?
Multiplication & Arrays: To build a rectangle with an area of 12, a student might try a 3 × 4, a 4 × 3, a 2 × 6, or a 6 × 2 array. This directly reinforces their knowledge of multiplication factors.
Geometric Definitions: The “Check Geometry” logic requires the shape to be a solid rectangle. If there is a hole in the middle or a “bump” on the side, the game will reject it, teaching students the specific properties of quadrilaterals.
Visualization: It encourages students to mentally decompose the target area into length and width before they start clicking.
