Make 100 Strategy Worksheets

The “add by making a 100” method is a strategy for adding two-digit numbers that can result in easier mental math calculations.

  1. Look for one of the numbers that is close to making a hundred with one of its digits.
  2. Try to “borrow” from the other number to make a 100 or a multiple of 100.
  3. Add to get the final sum.

Example:
97 + 68 can be calculated as 97 + 3 + 65 = 165
196 + 77 can be calculated as 196 + 4 + 73 = 273

Benefits of Adding by Making a 100:
Simplifies Calculations: By “shifting” one number closer to a hundred, you often end up with easier additions for the remaining digits.
Mental Math Friendly: This method often leads to smaller numbers to add in your head, making it ideal for mental math calculations.
Place Value Understanding: It reinforces the concept of place value by demonstrating how manipulation within and across place values affects the sum.
