Integer Word Problems Game
In this Integer Word Problems Game, your goal is to read and understand the scenario and use integer addition and subtraction to solve the problem. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Integer Word Problems Game
Strategic Tips: Visualizing the Logic
To solve these quickly, visualize the “starting point” and the “direction of travel."
The Vertical Number Line (Elevation & Temperature)
Most problems in this game (elevators, volcanoes, divers) use a vertical scale.
“Up,” “Climb,” or “Rise” = Positive movement (+).
“Down,” “Dive,” or “Drop” = Negative movement (-).
Example: You are at -30m and swim up 12m
.
Thinking: You are moving closer to the surface (zero).
Math: -30 + 12 = -18.
Crossing the Zero
In money or temperature problems, you often cross from positive to negative.
Income/Deposits: Movement to the right or up.
Expenses/Withdrawals: Movement to the left or down.
Example: You have 25 but spend 40.
Thinking: The first 25 you spend brings you to 0. You still need to spend 15 more.
Math: 25 - 40 = -15.
Finding the “Range” or “Difference”
When a question asks for the difference between a record high and a record low, you are finding the total distance between two points.
Trick: Add the absolute values (the distance of each number from zero).
Math: Record low of -40 and high of 105 means 40 + 105 = 145 total degrees of difference.
